Bad Check 24

Have you ever written a bad check? Even if you're very careful, it may happen that at some point of time, you write a bad check. For most people this is just a mistake that they have made, and they correct it quickly. Even in such cases, the bad check sometimes persists on following them through life, for a long time, and bothering them because of one small mistake. Just goes to show how important it is to be careful when you write out your checks. There are others for whom it becomes a sort of habit, because they are not very careful with their planning and are impulsive in the way they do things. For them, it can become a very costly affair that literally can haunt them through life. If you're one of those, it's time to mend your ways.

Whether it was just an accident or a regular habit, this could turn out to be a costly affair unless you rectify it as early as possible.

The first and most obvious cost associated with a bad check is the heavy fee that you pay to your bank. This could be anywhere between twenty and thirty dollars. The store to which you had given the bad check is also going to charge you for the trouble that they have been put to. This could work out to another payment of a similar amount.

That's for the immediate costs. When it comes to long-term effects, it does make a difference whether you are habitual or not. If it's just once that you've done this and were quick enough to take care of it, it shouldn't bother you too much. However, if you keep doing this, the most obvious problem is that you are going to end up paying huge charges several times over. That's not all, your bank may come to the conclusion that you are a risk and decide to close your account. If your account has gone into negative numbers you will have to take care of that too. If you don't do that, you will simply not be able to open an account anywhere else too.

Don't ever try issuing a bad check on a closed account, that's still worse. You may be tempted to do it out of desperation, if you're unable to open another account. In that case court action can be initiated against you, and specialized debt collection agency representatives will come calling on you.

Even after you pay off your debts, it might take a long time to become accepted as a normal customer, since banks will have access to the information that you had failed to pay, and for up to five years may refuse to open an account in your name.

The moral of the story is to just avoid writing bad checks, and if you do, take care of it as soon as possible.
